For Immediate Release
Chicago, IL – October 27, 2026 – Zacks Equity Research shares Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company(TSM - Free Report) as the Bull of the Day and Sonoco (SON - Free Report) as the Bear of the Day. In addition, Zacks Equity Research provides analysis on Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST - Free Report) , Walmart Inc. (WMT - Free Report) and BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc. (BJ - Free Report) .
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is one of, if not the most important companies in the world, making it a nearly surefire long-term investment in artificial intelligence and technology in general.
Taiwan Semi, or TSMC, physically manufactures the most cutting-edge semiconductors fueling the artificial intelligence boom and the wider tech-driven economy.
The chip builder reported a strong beat-and-raise Q3 on October 15, confirming that the AI capex spending spree remains full-steam ahead even as bubble concerns ramp up.
TSMC's Q4 earnings estimate surged ~12% since its mid-month release, while its FY27 estimate jumped significantly as well to help it earn a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
Its robust guidance is supported by "continued strong demand" for its "leading-edge process technologies, including the steep ramp-up of our 2-nanometer technology."
The stock, which nearly quadrupled the Tech sector over the last 15 years and tripled it over the past five, is down ~12% from its recent peaks.
TSMC is on the verge of a possible technical breakout, and it is trading at a 43% discount to its highs and in line with its 10-year median at 19.5X forward earnings.
TSMC: Is This the Best Tech Stock to Buy Now and Hold Forever?
AI and the global economy rely, directly or indirectly, on semiconductors. More importantly, TSMC likely manufactured a large share of the chips fueling the AI boom and beyond, since the chip builder reportedly captures 60% of the foundry market and 90% of advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
The company on a tiny island doesn't design or sell its own semiconductors. Instead, TSMC was founded in the late 1980s on a simple, yet revolutionary "pure-play foundry" model, dedicated exclusively to manufacturing advanced semiconductors for other tech companies.
Taiwan Semi has built an almost unbreachable fortress around its leading-edge chip-building business by earning the trust of customers such as Nvidia, Apple, AMD, Qualcomm, and other tech titans.
Nvidia, Apple, and others rely on TSMC because of its unmatched scale and expertise. Plus, their CEOs know that Taiwan Semi is their partner, not a competitor. The company is also critically rushing to expand its global manufacturing operation outside of Taiwan into the U.S., Japan, and beyond to address one of its only potential shortfalls: geopolitics.
What AI Bubble? Buy Taiwan Semi Stock for AI-Boosted Growth
Wall Street is still waiting for Amazon, Alphabet, Nvidia, and many other tech firms to report third-quarter earnings. But TSMC already confirmed that the AI capital spending boom is ramping up.
TSM grew its Q3 earnings by 58% on 41% higher revenue. The chip builder said that 3- nanometer shipments accounted for 33% of its total wafer revenue, up from 23% in the year-ago period. Plus, its most advanced 2-nm chips accounted for 8%, up from 3% in the second quarter (first time 2-nm shipments were broken out in its earnings release).
TSMC's Q4 earnings estimate surged 12% since its Q3 release on October 15, with its fiscal 2027 estimate 6% higher. The recent positivity extends its impressive run of upward earnings revisions, and its most accurate estimates for FY26 and FY27 came in above consensus. The tech giant's overall upbeat earnings revisions land it a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) right now.
The leading chip builder said at the start of 2026 that it expects to grow its revenue by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of ~25% between 2024 and 2029.
TSMC is projected to grow its revenue by 41% in 2026 and another 33% next year to reach $229 billion, adding more than $100 billion vs. 2025's $122 billion total and more than tripling its 2023 figure.
On the bottom line, it's projected to grow its earnings by 60% in 2026 and 32% next year, more than doubling its 2025 total ($10.65) in the process ($22.44 a share in 2027). TSMC's robust guidance is supported by "continued strong demand" for its "leading-edge process technologies, including the steep ramp-up of our 2-nanometer technology."
On top of that, Taiwan Semi has topped our quarterly earnings estimates for five years running.
Buy This Top-Ranked Tech Stock Now for Value and Breakout Potential?
Taiwan Semi stock soared ~3,300% in the last 15 years to blow away Tech's ~870%. More recently, TSM stock outclimbed the entire Mag 7 over the last year, up ~44%.
The chip builder is nearly neck-and-neck with Nvidia over the last three years, skyrocketing ~400%, while leaving the rest of the Mag 7 in the dust.
TSM is down roughly 12% from its October 5 records, and its average Zacks price target implies 27% upside from Monday's levels.
Some of its drop can be attributed to the laws of market gravity. The stock reached heavily overbought RSI levels to start October. TSM stock is attempting to retake its 50-day and its long-term 21-week moving averages.
The pullback, coupled with its strong earnings growth outlook, has TSMC trading at a 43% discount to its highs at 19.5X forward 12-month earnings.
The chip builder is also trading almost directly in line with the Tech sector, the S&P 500, and TSMC's 10-year median, even though it has climbed ~1,300% in the past decade vs. the Zacks Tech sector's ~470%.
On top of all that, TSMC's balance sheet is robust and supports its various expansion efforts. And 16 of the 19 brokerage recommendations that Zacks has are "Strong Buys."
Disclosure: Ben Rains owns TSM stock in his personal portfolio.
Sonoco is a packaging giant serving big clients across food & beverage, household products, automotive, and beyond.
The global packaging firm's earnings outlook has tanked over the last year and a half as Sonoco struggles against ongoing inflation pressures, weaker volumes, and other headwinds. SON missed our Q3 adjusted earnings estimates by 5% and lowered its outlook once again.
Sonoco's downbeat earnings revisions picture lands it a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) right now.
Should Investors Avoid SON Stock Right Now?
Sonoco is a packaging manufacturing powerhouse that works closely with globally recognized brands. The South Carolina-based company's packaging portfolio includes Rigid Paper, Metal, Industrial Paper, and Industrial & Specialty offerings.
SON sells its array of packaging products to firms across the economy, from Food & Beverage, Household Products, and Beauty & Personal Care to Construction, Automotive, and beyond.
Sonoco has grown its revenue rather steadily over the last 25 years, outside of a few cyclical-based declines. The firm expanded its reach via its acquisition of Europe's leading food cans, ends and closures manufacturer Eviosys in December 2024.
That said, its Q3 revenue dropped 4% YoY, marking its third-straight quarterly decline against its big Eviosys-boosted 2025. SON posted a GAAP net loss of -$732 million, or -$7.36 per share, "reflecting a non-cash goodwill impairment charge of $(829) million attributable to the Consumer EMEA/APAC and Industrial APAC businesses."
Meanwhile, its adjusted EPS dropped 13% YoY, and it provided downbeat guidance on October 21. "During the third quarter, our businesses faced a combination of external challenges," CEO Howard Coker said in prepared remarks.
"Drought conditions across parts of Europe and the U.S. impacted crop yields and pressured food can demand, while the impact of inflation on raw materials, freight, energy, and other operating costs exceeded our expectations."
Sonoco's recent downward EPS revisions earn it a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell). On top of that, SON is part of the Containers-Paper and Packaging industry that ranks in the bottom 17% of over 250 Zacks industries.

Costco AI Search Traffic Soars: Can It Fuel Online Sales?
Costco Wholesale Corp. is witnessing a notable shift in online shopping behavior as artificial intelligence increasingly shapes how consumers discover products. Although AI-driven search remains a relatively small channel compared with traditional sources of website traffic, its growing adoption is opening new opportunities for the warehouse retailer to connect with shoppers and drive online purchases.
On its fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings call, Costco reported that traffic reaching its website through AI searches grew at a triple-digit rate for the second consecutive quarter. More importantly, this traffic continued to deliver the highest conversion rate among all sources visiting its site. Management stated that sales originating from searches conducted through AI tools, including those offered by OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini, were growing at a triple-digit pace.
Appliances and consumer electronics lead purchases originating from AI searches, broadly mirroring Costco's overall e-commerce mix. Memberships are also among the leading items discovered through these searches, suggesting shoppers are finding not just products but the retailer's membership proposition.
Costco sees an advantage in AI-driven product discovery because it does not use paid digital advertising. The company is working with large language model providers to improve product data and website pages so its offerings appear clearly in search results. While the channel remains in its early stages, the strong growth in traffic and sales, coupled with high conversion rates, highlights its potential to become a more important source of online purchases.
How Are WMT and BJ Leveraging AI to Drive Digital Growth?
Walmart Inc. is using AI to make digital shopping more personalized and convenient. Walmart said usage of its AI-powered Sparky assistant increased 70% year over year, while customers using Sparky spend 40% more per order. Walmart also highlighted Sparky's ability to build meal plans, recommend products and recognize prior purchases across stores and online, helping shoppers avoid duplicate purchases and simplifying product discovery.
BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc. is also deepening digital engagement through AI-enabled shopping support. BJ's Wholesale said its AI-powered assistant, Bev, has handled more than 100,000 member conversations, helping shoppers find products, check club hours and better use their memberships. BJ's Wholesale is pairing this capability with broader digital convenience, as digitally enabled comparable sales rose 30% in the second quarter of fiscal 2026 and digitally engaged members demonstrated stronger spending and loyalty.
How Does Costco Stack Up Against Its Industry?
Costco stock has climbed 16.4% year to date compared with the industry's rise of 13.2%.
What Does Costco's Current Valuation Suggest?
Costco's forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio stands at 43.55, higher than the industry's ratio of 28.91. However, it is trading below its 12-month median level of 44.36, indicating some moderation in valuation.
What Do Earnings Estimates Signal for Costco?
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Costco's current fiscal-year sales and earnings per share implies year-over-year growth of 8.4% and 11%, respectively. For the next fiscal year, the consensus estimate indicates a 7.2% rise in sales and 9.8% growth in earnings.
Costco's Investment Case
Costco's strong membership loyalty, expanding digital capabilities and growing AI-driven engagement support its long-term growth prospects. However, the emerging AI-search opportunity remains relatively small, while the stock's premium valuation warrants caution despite encouraging earnings expectations. Investors may prefer a balanced approach at the current juncture. Costco currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
